NIKE SB BERLIN OPEN – 30th June – 2nd July SEMIS & FINALS

1st Matias Dell Olio → Photo Maksim Kalanep

Competitors stepped up their game Sunday for the Semis and Finals of the Nike SB Berlin Open at the Shelter skatepark.

Another packed house saw the 30 qualified skaters from Saturday’s heats all take to the park in order to bring the rider count down to the 12 who would skate finals.

2nd Hyun Kummer → Photo by Maksim Kalanep

Consistency was notched up in the Semis as the €20,000 prize purse came into reach and saw Giorgi Balhhamishvili have one of his best ever comp runs, surprising himself into the last 12 and twisting up decent hurricane on the kink rail in the process. Equally as surprised was Hyun Kummer who was just under a minute late to his heat yet casually put down an ally Oop BS flip over the A frame and kickflips to both back and frontside 5-0 down the hubba, strolling into finals.

Such was the level from all riders that final’s jams were switched up to 2 man, 3 minute visits, giving judges brain time and skaters an unimpeded run of the park. This proved perfect for Vincent Milou whose lines took him all over, and out of, the park, popping out of the top of the China Bank to Back Smith on a brick sized ledge and into 3rd place. Kummer utilizing the full allocated time for his final run, made the most of it, cruising the park with a super laidback style and bizarre no footed airwalk ollies, casually dropping a varial flip the hard way over the rail – 2nd. Winning rights are handed firmly to Matias Dell Olio who came out of the blocks fully loaded and ready to fire - switch flip back tail on the hubba, Hard flip back lip, feeble grind the whole of the kinked rail, big flip front board on the A-Frame rail and some of the best air punches of the day.

1st Matias Dell Olio - 2nd Hyun Kummer - 3rd Vincent Milou - 4th Herman Moller 5th Fernando Bramsmark - 6th Jon Consentino - 7th Justin Sommer - 8th Egor Kaldikov - 9th Yannick Schall - 10th Neverton Casella

While the judges were verifying the results someone lit the blue touch paper of the firework show that is Best Trick won with a mind melting Nollie heel flip front feeble down the rail by Jon Cosentino

Nike SB | Barcelona AM Finals

Nike SB | Barcelona AM Finals

Jonas Carlsson → BS Smith Grind

A sunny weekend in Barcelona is a tough act to beat, drop in 15 top AMs, a kicking sound system and a concrete skatepark next to the beach and you would be hard pushed to top the finals of the Nike SB Barcelona AM at Skate Agora, Saturday.

The finals format was simple – 5 x 3 man, 3 minute, jam format heats. With only one visit to the park for the skaters there were no opportunities to play around for anyone who was hoping to end the day with a pocket full of prize money.

Mathias Torres from Chile passes by Barcelona every few months and has clearly got feel for local lines, showing smooth flow and smashing an inward heel down the stairs, but the standard was high at the Badalona park. Gustavo Ribeiro, a second place finalist from last year had his eye on taking a step up the podium by bringing home a bigspin fs blunt to fakie down the rail but couldn’t hold the rest of his run together enough to retake a top spot.

1st Tim Debuche  2nd Jorge Simoes  3rd Justin Sommer

Justin Sommer’s skating over the last couple of days showed he was going to make a point and demonstrated the fact by bringing a hard flip front board on the rail to the party and closing down 3rd spot. Last year’s winner Jorge Simoes was back in the final mix, on form and looking good for the double, snapping into a frontside ollie to switch krook on the volcano and taking a bigspin fakie nosegrind to the bump to ledge. Young Tim Debuche, 15 from the south of France, had other plans though, and a 360 flip lipslide to fakie and kick flip to front nose grind on the bank to ledge was enough to turn the judges heads and award him the overall title.

The European capital of skateboarding, the proving ground for AMs, Barcelona, once again blessed us with sunshine and a perfect temp for the qualifiers of the Nike SB Barcelona AM on Friday afternoon.

Many of the skaters who had travelled into Barcelona, got in the mood for the heat rounds with a classic ‘Hill Bomb’ from the top of the city down to the newly opened Barcelona Box creative space situated on Barceloneta Beach.

Stadium bleachers and screens set up around The Skate Agora skatepark in Badalona down the coast, added to the intense session atmosphere as the 120 registered skaters from across the globe threw down for the biggest AM skate event on the continent.

With only 20 skaters advancing through to the semis to meet the 20 pre-qualified riders, 3 man, 3 minute heats flew through in a blaze of fierce skating.

15 made the cut for the Saturday finals that saw a bunch of big hitters missing the grade in the insanely tough field.

Getting through with some man size lines, was Londoner Casper Brooker alongside Norwegian child prodigy Jonas Carlson, who showed the flow maturity of a skater a decade his senior. The top three from the semis were Didrick Galasso with trademark relaxed effortless cool, Mads Christensen solid and textbook as ever and going through in the top spot big man Alexander Risvad showing super consistency throughout the day.

Full list of results

For those that didn’t qualify there was consolation in the fact that they could let loose in town and take in the launch of the Marcel Veldman’s solo exhibition ‘Definitely Not the New Fluff Exhibition’ - skateboarding in its purest form.

The overall winner will also leave with a ‘ticket to fly’  pass getting them an invite to the Nike SB Berlin Open at the end of July

Get Used to It | Trailer

Get Used to It | Trailer

Get Used To It is a story about women’s empowerment and skateboarding in South Africa.
Travel with us to the opening of a “Skate School” in Johannesburg. Run by Skateistan, an NGO that empowers children through education and skateboarding, the site provides a safe space to learn, grow and land tricks.

Gender inequality is a huge problem in South Africa. The streets of Jo’burg are dangerous, particularly for girls. They face discrimination and the threat of violence on a daily basis. Through skateboarding, Skateistan offers a route to independence, self-discovery and education for all.

Skateistan is supported by superstars of the art and skateboarding worlds, such as Paul McCarthy and Tony Hawk, who ew over especially for the opening. That day, the kids felt their full potential and they are reminded of it every time they come to school.

This story was created by BLAM Studio in partnership with new storytelling platform oolipo.
