Nike SB | Paris AM 2016

Nike SB | Paris AM 2016

With the majority of France focused on the days football, there was a small corner of the French capital outside of the Palais de Tokyo, where all thoughts were tuned into skating and final day of the Nike SB Paris AM

After a morning of rain, blazing sunshine bathed the ‘pop-up’ park designed to test the adaptability of the skaters and modeled in part to represent 20 districts of the city.

With yesterday’s qualifiers looking as though the set up was perhaps a little too challenging, skaters in semi finals and finals took it apart as though it was the local spot, yet again demonstrating that the level of amateur skating in the Nike SB Euro Series has rocketed since it was first introduced 3 years ago.

A truly international pack of 30 riders came into the Semi Finals and displayed a wild variety of styles and approaches to park from the sublime - Kai Hillebrand’s demonstration of casual style with a back tail pretzel out over the bank to bank -
to the down right ridiculous - Jacopo Carozzi 50-50 on the rail to a one of a kind double foot flip out.

The top 3 from the Paris AM have all emerged in just the last 2 years and are becoming familiar faces one the international scene. 3rd Egor Kaldikov form St. Petersburg, Russia, mixed technical ability with consistency - Krooked grind nollie flip out and Front blunts on the rail every time. 2nd place Vincent Milou stepped up his game in the final run – flipping into all his tricks on the rail and Ollie up to nose grind up and over the bank to bank wall ride. But taking the win right off the back of his 1st place in the London AM was Aurelien Giraud who defies belief with his power and effortless consistency when it counts – bigger flip front board to fakie, 270 lipslide 270 out, 360 flip lipslide.

The next and final stop in the Nike SB European Series lands in Germany for the Berlin Open where some of the best pros from Europe and beyond gather at the Nike SB Shelter park to compete for a share of the €20,000 prize purse. 8th – 10th July

Finals 2016 London AM

Sunday’s semi finals and finals of the Nike SB London AM at BaySixty6 Skatepark proved yet again that the level of amateur skateboarding in Europe is simply off the hook. Super intense heats in the semis kept the crowd and judges struggling to decide which 15 out of the 60 competitors would make the cut.
Fast, clean lines with next level tricks across the whole park set the benchmark and gave a solid promise to the crowded sidelines that the finals were going to be special.

After a heavy weekend of skating in this large flowing park, finalists needed to dig deep to keep focus and Vincent Milou did both to claim third by way of back smith round the curved ledge and a 270 ollie to front lip on the flat bar.

Taking second spot was Kevin Baekkel, whose attack on the transitions were taken at mach ten. Mixing old school boosted airs with a seeming desire to hit every feature in the park, his loose but powerful flow got him a 2nd on the podium.

At just 18, Aurelien Giraud from France was unstoppable, precision and catch was text book, landing a huge backside flip the entire length of the pyramid, a tre double flip down the stairs and BS 270 noseblunt on the flat bar with a consistency that defied belief. On top of the €3000 for first place, Aurelien will be travelling to the Berlin Open in July to compete against some of Europe’s premier pros at the  Nike SB Shelter skatepark.

1st Aurelien Girauld 2nd Kevin Baekkel 3rd Vincent Milou

The next stop on the Nike SB European Series touches down in Paris where the famous street spot Le Dome, at the Palais de Tokyo, gets treated to 9 additional skateable features 14th – 15th June.

Jorge Simoes takes 1st in Saturday’s finals

The sea breeze off the Mediterranean did little to cool today’s finals of the Nike SB Barcelona AM at Skate Agora.
Qualified amateur riders from yesterday’s heats and semis took to the park from early afternoon to lock down lines and tricks in order to try and scoop part of the €10,000 prize money and a ticket to the Nike SB Berlin Open for the ultimate super final winner.
Taking to the course in groups of 3, the level of speed and technicality was raised another level from the off. Robin Bolian tore around the park on a mission eating up the end quarter pipe, Marek Zaprazny Nollie bs flip down the stairs, nollie front heel over the bump to bumpn and Phil Zwijsen took an incredible 2 and a half minute run but wasn’t good enough in the judges eyes to put him in the top 3.
The super final saw Gard Hvaara, Jorge Simoes and Gustavo Ribeiro go head to head in what turned out to be rail and stair battle which was ultimately taken by Simoes helped by a 180 switch crook and backside over crook down the rail.
1st Jorge Simoes 2nd Gustavo Ribeiro 3rd Gard Hvaara,
Before prize giving the best trick saw traditional hammers and no hopers being thrown down the stairs, ledge and rail in the best trick.

Nike SB 2016 Barcelona AM | Day 1

Nike SB 2016 Barcelona AM | Day 1

The first stop of the Nike SB European Series, the Barcelona AM, got lit up yesterday at the Skate Agora plaza BDN. Qualifiers saw 20 skaters bounce through to meet up with 32 pre-qualified in a flood-lit semis.
An on form and up for it crowd filled the eastern bleachers and created noise throughout the day cranking the energy on the park and AMs that tore it up.

Qualifiers were 78 deep and competition was tough with so few semi spots up for grabs. Young Jonas Carlsson from Norway surprised and stoked out everyone with man sized tricks out of a 13 year old boys body and Brazilian Ivan Moteiro took charge of the park in his heat with a faultless run, giving him a pass to semis and then landing the right side of the cut in to Saturday’s main event.

The semi finals upped the ante with a line up of Europe’s top AMs stepping up to try and secure a spot in the finals. With a variety of styles and tricks on display judges were saying that it was one of the toughest comps to score. Farid Ulrich got his position in finals with smooth, fast and stylish flow. Phil Zwijsen used the whole park with solid consistency but Vincent Milou goes into tomorrow’s final in first place out of a 12 man start list who will compete for part of the €10,000 purse on offer.

Doors open at Skate Agora for tomorrow’s finals at 5.30 PM with the comp starting at 6.30. Entrance is free.
