Madars Apse | Season 2 of Skate Tales

Madars Apse | Season 2 of Skate Tales

With his sails set on exploring the wilder shores of skate culture around the world, there was no way that Madars’ global exploration of the skate underground Skate Tales wasn’t going to pitch up with Matt Tomasello and the Fancy Lad brigade, sooner or later.

These Bostonian renegades are not only re-imagining what skateboarding can be, they are ripping as they do so. As innovative, creative backyard wizards, they have taken the concept of tricks and board assembly into new realms. Their viral videos have racked up millions of views globally as the crew have upended the very concept of skateboarding itself and won themselves fans in every corner of the planet. Using their skatehouse as a kind of insane laboratory, the Fancy Lads have won worldwide acclaim as their creations and reckless charm have seen them showcased in museums and comedy shows alike

Gustavo & Gabriel Ribeiro | in Barcelona

Mundo Gustavo touches down in the world’s greatest skateboarding city as the Ribeiro brothers join an Ementa filming mission to Barcelona. Episode 4 sees SLS winner Gustavo Ribeiro dip out of his contest schedule to wrap the Ementa video with a heavy Portuguese crew ripping around the iconic spots of the skate capital. As well as hitting up Parallel and Besos, Gustavo and Gabriel roll up on MACBA with Guilherme Durand, Bruno Senra, Emidio Silva and Rapha Castilho in tow to kick it with Macbalife head honcho Alex Braza at the world’s most famous skatespot. As Julio Arnau explains in our Greetings From Barcelona feature, the 1992 Summer Olympics saw a transformation in the cityscape from visionary urban planning to neighbourhood regeneration projects which would turn the Catalan city into a skateboarder’s paradise. Within a decade the city was a feature of every skate magazine and video across the globe, and to this day remains a Mecca for skaters who want to add their chapter to the city’s skateboarding lore. From risky rickshaw rides to checking out the sensational skateboard artwork of Julien Deniau, a little beachside mission and an impromptu rooftop snack hack, see how the boys squeeze every ounce of juice from a crazy weekend of skateboarding right throughout Barcelona.

RED BULL PARIS CONQUEST | THE JAM SESSION

RED BULL PARIS CONQUEST | THE JAM SESSION

They hit the streets of Paris to check out some classic Parisian spots with TJ Rogers, Lucas Rabelo, Angelo Caro, Gustavo Ribeiro & more as they get ready for the Red Bull Paris Conquest! Paris has a skateboarding history dating back to the 1970’s both at the Trocadero where slalom was all the rage (as immortalised by the 1978 short film Trocadero Blue Citron) and at the Beton Hurlant skatepark and Bowl de la Villette. It wasn’t until the mid-1980’s, however, that skaters began to explore the city streets beyond the Trocadero, discovering new playgrounds like ‘Le Dome’, Chatelet, La Defense, Creteil, Bercy and so many others. For the Paris Conquest event they recreated some of the French capitol's most famous skate spots in a unique street course at the foot of the Eiffel Tower.

Tim Débauché | 'Opus I' Rough Cut

Tim Débauché | 'Opus I' Rough Cut

Tim Débauché is 100% skateboarder: he eats, sleeps and breathes skateboarding. As with every skateboarder, Tim has had his fair share of physical issues: growth spurts led to a year off through endless knee pain, graduating to the curse of the flip trick generation: ankle problems. Notwithstanding those costs of doing business, Tim has depth to his skating game and proved it with his recently-released ‘Opus 1’ part. This is Tim’s first full video part, no doubt foreshadowing many more to come. Steady video output from him would be a win all-round - you really don’t see his level of style and touch every day. Enjoy!

Given his natural affinity with the climate and skate terrain of his native Sweden, Red Bull asked the sublimely talented Karl Berglind if he would like to experience some of the lunar landscapes that master-craftsmen like Evergreen and Dreamland have poured into the spellbinding scenery of America’s last wide open space. A perfect symbiosis of skater and space, enjoy!

The Maze w/ Vladik Scholz, Madars Apse, Gustavo Ribeiro & Jost Arens

The Maze w/ Vladik Scholz, Madars Apse, Gustavo Ribeiro & Jost Arens

Watch Gustavo Ribeiro, Jost Arens and Madars Apse join Vladik Scholz to rip a hydraulically alive skatepark pursued by a malicious marble in his latest creative skate adventure.

Vladik linked up with master skatepark craftsman Andreas Schutzenberger to roll out a pioneering indoor skatepark project: a hydraulic tilting skatepark labyrinth known as The Maze. Based on the ubiquitous childhood marble game of yore, Schutzi’s 40-tonne, 21 square-metre skatepark creation is suspended 3 metres into the air on a series of hydraulic jacks which make the floor slope in any chosen direction – even as you skate it!

If you have ever skated a makeshift run-up or a jerry-rigged flatbank, you will doubtless be aware what an absolute nightmare trying to re-calibrate the physics and balance of just rolling on a shifting surface is. Busting tricks on an undulating first-floor skate spot, let alone rolling around on it, takes more than nerve: it takes instinctive, reflexive balance.

So, when Vladik chose Portugal's Gustavo Ribeiro, Germany's Jost Arens and Latvia's very own Madars Apse to come and check out what IOU Ramps managed to create this time around he knew he was selecting three skaters who have proven their ability to adapt and deliver time and again. What he didn’t tell them, however, was that the final twist designed into the slanted and enchanted skatepark was a giant chromeball, released to respond to the demands of gravity and pursue them around the labyrinth, full tilt!

Get amongst Vladik’s marble madness as another one of his skating daydreams becomes a reality, including a little peek behind the curtain of Schutzi’s creative experiments to inspire your imagination!

2020 Red Bull BOWL RIPPERS | Highlights

2020 Red Bull BOWL RIPPERS | Highlights

Buckle up for a unique edition of Red Bull Bowl Rippers 2020 from Marseille. A stripped-back showdown promised to produce some much-needed skate action from the south of France this past weekend on October 3-4. The city's very own son, Jean Pantaleo, beat all comers over the weekend to become the new champion of Red Bull Bowl Rippers, edging out previous winner Jaime Mateu by a single point.

In contention to put their stamp on the fabled Bowl Du Prado during this special edition of Red Bull annual seaside showdown was a 60-strong field of European shrednauts, including Elson Patrick, Danny León, Dannie Carlsen, Jean Pantaleo, Marcel Wintherlig, Anthony Mardelle, Stellio Sakellarides, Simon Léauté, Ivan Federico, Bjorn Lillesoe, Karl Berglind, Vincent Milou and Jaime Mateu. With the weekend split into a Saturday contest and a Sunday Best Trick jam, Pantaleo doubled down on his contest victory by making an enormous transfer line into one of the bowls, a feat which had previously cost him not one, but two, broken heels.

Red Bull Bowl Rippers 2020 results:

  • Jean Pantaleo

  • Jaime Mateu

  • Karl Berglind

  • Danny León

  • Ivan Federico
