Vans Asia rented a “Shikumen”, an old Shanghai lane house, for a month and invited the Vans team from all over the world to explore the city. Staying in week-long shifts, the team from the USA, France, Malaysia, Australia, Thailand, Indonesia, South Korea, and Japan cruised around with the Vans China team as they skated the city of marble, devouring xiaolongbaos and dodging scooters along the way. Hringur is a short video about the hunt for skate spots in rural Iceland. A 10 day journey over 1,300 kilometres, following the ring road through mountains, volcanoes, glaciers, fjords and waterfalls as it circles the near deserted landscape. Without any local guide and with very few built up areas outside of the capital, the trip relied on prior research using online maps to identify potential skate spots, often in the wilderness.

It's a particular type of architecture, that first in America, then all along Sicilian coasts, had an important development right after World War 2. We are talking about the raising of seaside resorts, "villages for the beaches", those places born to satisfy the desire of that middle class average human being to escape from the everyday boring jobs and life, to sprint themselves straight into this limbo of channelled fun. This new business got in the mind-set of lots of sicilian contractor's, and soon enough Sicily was full of these new type of villages.
Skating that place was both cool and a bit sad: first of all, it doesn't happen everyday to be able to find and skate something like that in Sicily, but at the same time it's sad to see a structure with that potential, culturally and architecturally, ended up like that. An eco of 90's piano-bar music goes around the air and send us straight to those days when people were still believing to have a different future than the one built on a sand castle. Jacopo Carozzi, Aref Koushesh and Martino Cattaneo ripping up the Grand Hotel Lido!

Japanese skateboarding scene is extremely small in the world. However, Element Japan riders (Especially Ryo Sejiri and Buchi) have nice character and skill. And Japan team has more new generations too who hiding big possibility. They are aimed for the improvement of the Japanese brand value in the world skateboarding scene by this project. And they want to make a Japanese rider famous in the world street skateboarding.

All 5 competing photographers (Chris Burkard, Ashley Barker, our photo collaborator Roberto Alegria, Grant Gunderson & French Fred) had to make a 8 to 9 minutes slideshow, celebrating their photography's body of work, with definite rules on how the images could be displayed, or not.
French Fred won the Grand Prize and Chris Burkard’s the people’s choice award.
“On top of being very honoured with this win, I am also very proud of the slideshow I put together. As both a photographer and a videographer, it was really fun for me to build up an audio-visual piece sublimating my photographic works. Yet it was really challenging to create something strong and enjoyable to watch that last nearly 10 minutes. Early tests were not so convincing, and finally, I decided to not worry so much about gathering potentially winning ingredients, but to create something I would just be happy about and proud of, attempting to bring something different, fresh and hopefully exciting. If it wasn’t for that competition, I would never have created this slideshow and I am now happy to share it with everyone” - Fred Mortagne
