In an era where sneakers change hands between collectors for five and even six-figure sums, it's sometimes hard to remember when kicks weren't a 'grail' item for people worldwide. 15 years ago, sneakerheads were a subculture centered in New York, LA, London, Japan and the Internet. Then, in 2002, the Nike SB Dunk was introduced by Nike's fledgling skateboarding division, and an 80s basketball shoe ignited both the world of skateboarding and sneaker culture.
VICE Magazine had a front-row seat at the time as one of Nike SB's very first partners. So when the 15th anniversary rolled around they had an immediate thought – let's make a Dunk documentary that delves into the history of the SB Dunk, and charts how we got here.
We found the story reflects the unique intersection of sneakerhead collectors with the skate community. Riders like Richard Mulder, Reese Forbes, Gino Iannucci, and Danny Supa helped determined the look, feel, approach and tone of the SB Dunk, in partnership with the Nike SB design team. That group quickly built a grassroots movement with skate retailers like Supreme and Huf, the nascent "hype" press of Freshnessmag.com and NikeTalk, and new Nike team riders like Brian Anderson, Wieger van Wageningen and Paul Rodriguez. Informed by the "gotta have them all" mentality of OG Japanese collector/retailers like Hidefumi Hommyo (of Chapter and Atmos), sneaker-specific boutiques like Undefeated popped up, region-specific releases were developed, and the sneaker culture your hypebeast cousin now talks about incessantly was fully established.
Today the SB Dunk is iconic, but it's easy to forget that it's still a skate shoe first and foremost that guys like Theotis Beasely, Sean Malto and Ishod Wair still rock religiously.

EACC (Espai d’Art Contemporani de Castelló) is hosting the first solo exhibition in Spain by the French artist Raphaël Zarka. This site-specific project for the EACC is co-produced with BPS22, Musée d’art de la Province de Hainaut in Charleroi, Belgium.
Born in Montpelier in 1977, and based in Paris, Zarka belongs to a generation of young artists who use found forms as the raw material of their work.
And while the starting point of his work is basically sculptural, he is particularly concerned with art in public spaces and the challenge they pose for artists, rooted in his abiding fascination from a very young age with skateboarding and the whole culture around it. In fact, he has developed this interest in various essays on the history of skateboarding, and on its topography and strategies, and how the experience of skating in different urban sculptures and public areas redefines these places. As such, the artist approaches the practice of skateboarding as a kind of rewriting of spaces conceived for a particular use, to then transfer them to his artistic practice. In this way, he reiterates the same practice that had previously fuelled his interest in abandoned sculptural constructions in order to give them new uses.
By using the concept of “documentary sculptures” with regards his practice, Zarka underscores his desire to voluntarily work with pre-existing forms, which are discovered more than invented. Akin to an archaeologist digging up an object, the artist is concerned not only with what he has found, but also where and how it was found and the history behind it, and he renders his theoretical approach indistinctly across photography, video, sculpture and drawing.
While Zarka’s rethinking of skateboarding is sustained on an ecology of critical and contemporary artistic creation, his interest in reutilisation defines the rendering of his “skateable” sculptures, designed on the basis of scientific objects by the mathematician Arthur Schönflies (1853-1928), little geometrical elements that fit together without leaving empty spaces. Zarka designed these modules by amplifying them to the scale of urban fixtures and thus enabling them to be used by skaters. These corten steel forms, whose angles and planes are perfects for skateboarding, are sculptures in their own right. In consequence, skaters have to adapt to Zarka’s sculptures in the same way as they co-opt the objects they find in the public space, with the scale of the modules being based on the benches used by skaters.

In the project for EACC the artist transforms the exhibition hall into a hybrid space where skaters and spectators have to establish their own frameworks of cohabitation.
At the same time, the suite of photos Riding Modern Art which illustrates this concept is on show on the upper level of the exhibition hall. These photos, which the artist culled from skateboarding magazines, show various public sculptures used by skaters as ramps, half pipes and so on.
This archive work is basically a work-in-progress begun in 2005 in video format that transformed into a photographic collection from 2007 onwards. Unlike the stance taken by an art historian or critic, here Zarka’s curatorial work is based on a series of images of public sculptures and the use skaters make of them. Renowned sculptors, such as Serra, Deacon, Oteiza and Solano, appear alongside unknown artists or others overlooked by the history of art whose recognition is limited to the local realm. This process also lends emphasis to professional photographers whose images are generally confined to skateboarding publications. Zarka contacts them to propose that they form part of the collection, offering them the same economic conditions as a specialised magazine. Finally, he underscores the strong choreographic quality of the images by registering the figures and forms performed by skaters derived from the geometry of the sculptures, in one way, treating the sculptures almost if they were a music score. Ultimately, in Riding Modern Art Zarka conflates the roles of curator, collector and editor.

WHERE DID YOU GROW UP? WHAT´S YOUR AGE?
I´m 35 years old, grew up in Munich and moved to the States with my family at 15 years old to Newton, Kansas.
WHAT WERE THE VIDEOS OR SECTIONS THAT INFLUENCED YOU THE MOST BACK IN THE DAYS? WHAT SKATERS?
My first video was “Ban This” from Powel Peralta, I liked a lot probably influenced me a lot. When I really got in skating the “Mouse” video influenced me a lot. Marino´s part and Sheffey, Carrol, all those guys, all those great skaters in that video.
AND NOWADAYS?
Nowadays just radom parts on internet as everyone else, whatever is hot at the moment.
WHAT VIDEO PART IT WAS THE HARDEST TO ACHIVE?
The “Away Days” part it was probably the one that I try the hardest for, the other ones always just kind of came together, that was like my most “serious” part or whatever.
WHAT DO YOU RATHER TO SKATE WITH? CLASSIC MODELS OR YOU ARE OPEN TO TRY NEW INNOVATIONS THAT A COMPANY LIKE ADIDAS COULD PROVIDE?
I like trying new innovations, I just find a lot of times that like people which just called gimmick new innovations they are just like bullshit but if there´s really something new and really something that´s better I´m down to try it.
HOW IS THE PROCESS TO DESING YOUR SHOES ON ADIDAS?
“I´ve just told them what I wanted, they knew how to make it and knew what not to make”
You just have a basic idea for shoes and sat down with designers start talking about it, making samples, looking at all shoes and getting different ideas from older shoes and putting together in my shoe. My first time making the shoes, I´ve just told them what I wanted, they knew how to make it and knew what not to make. Just makes samples, the first samples never like you wanted, they just did like three samples or something, by the end it was time that we had to put something out, we didnt have time to change it anymore but we also got to a point were it´s good enough and that´s the shoes that came out.

RECENTLY IT HAS BEEN CONFIRMED SKATEBOARDING AS A OLYMPIC SPORT IN 2020. WHAT´S YOUR OPINION ABOUT?
I don´t know… I think is pretty cool that it is recognize that is something more than just punks going out graffity, I think it is extremely hard, it´s difficult.

WOULD YOU BE DOWN TO GO TO THE OLYMPICS IF YOU HAVE THE CHANCE TO?
[laughs] I will be like 40, I don´t have any bussiness in the Olimpics. It´s pretty gnarly, that´s where real athlete goes, I don´t really consider myself that but I dont wanna say that skateboarding is not a sport and all that shit ´cause there are people that are athletes in skateboarding and they do incredible stuff, it´s cool that they can have that legitime place to show that, I guess. People get really upset about it, I don´t really get upset about it. If skateboarding is not a sport then its an art, right? What are the other options? Whatever the not sport part skateboading is I´m sure that´s not gonna die or go away, some comedy can´t really change what skateboarding is.

DO YOU WORK OUT, GO TO THE GYM OR STRETCH TO MAINTAIN LONGEVITY IN SKATEBOARDING?
I don´t believe in the gym, I don´t strecht, sometimes strecht before, I probably should more, I just eat whatever I like really, I try to stay healthy and not eat like garbage, drink water. Just when I skate I try to have fun whithout killing myself, I don´t think is necessary to destroy yourself to skateboard. Sometimes I ride my bicycle but not like Lance Amstrong or anything just more relax riding. I might change too, I feel like maybe I should be doing something more to maintain my body, I think meditading might be the best thing for me anyway, since is like more the control center that´s the problem.

ANY ADVICE FOR THE KIDS WHO LOOK UP TO YOU OR ARE TRYING TO ACHIVE A SKATEBOARDING CAREER?
Yeah don´t try to achive a career, just skate and have fun. Whatever you get out of skating at this point is what you are gonna get out when you get your name on a shoe or board, when you have your career does not really change, so you better make sure that you like it at whatever stage you are at.
WHAT ARE THE FUTURE PLANS?
I don´t know… stay healthy, spend time with my family, keep skating, just life whatever that´s means. Get through four years of Trump [laughs] that´s goes for the whole world.

Keep up peaceful, don't take at all ladies skating down the side blocs

The union of Siete Puertas forces and Tangram Wheel Co. has resulted in a limited edition of skateboards.
The protagonists of the series are Octavio Barrera, Carlos Cardeñosa and Dani Millan and their corresponding models are illustrated with an analogical photograph that tries to reflect their personality. To celebrate its launch they have organized an exhibition in which the boards can be seen, in addition to the original photographs and many others shot by these three Canarian skaters.
